Everyone loves boobies! I love that headline, cause it’s so true. Boobies feed the world and protect our hearts. And in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention Month, I feel compelled to write about the beautiful boobie this week!
Earlier this year, I attended the 20th anniversary of Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) up in Lake Tahoe, California. Some of my closest friends started this amazing event in honor of their dear friend Monica Steward who passed away at the ridiculously young age of 28 from breast cancer. The event was created with the goal of making breast cancer awareness and breast health a topic of conversation among young people because, let’s face it—young or old, man or woman, no one is immune to the disease. It has touched all of us in one way or another.
This past weekend, I was so incredibly honored to be a part of B4BC’s Chasing Sunshine Ocean Retreat, a phenomenal weekend dedicated to breast cancer survivors and bad ass thrivers. By connecting breast cancer survivors with nature-based wellness and sustainability experiences, they can enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship. The retreat was led by my amazing friend Megan Pischke, and we all shared our expertise in yoga, nutritional medicine, life skills coaching, Chinese Medicine, and more.
We ate delicious real food, practiced yoga, surfed, received acupuncture, lounged on the beach and talked femininity. It was a huge lesson in being present, being in gratitude, the importance of taking real care of ourselves and connecting with others. Just being around these wonderful women was so incredibly inspiring. It really put life into perspective.
And it made me think.
All of us health coaches talk about the importance of self-care—that could be yoga, meditation, getting a mani-pedi or a massage, simply walking on the beach or just sleeping in! However, I’ve never spoken about the importance of taking care of your boobies!
Making that doctor’s appointment to get a mammogram, or your annual exam, or a physical, or getting your teeth cleaned, or having your hormone balances checked—you get where I’m going here, right? All of these little things that may seem inconvenient are so incredibly important to keeping our bodies healthy and happy—inside and out.
So in addition to having the doctors check your bod, this is an excellent reminder to get into the habit of going to second base with yourself—check your own boobies! I admit, this is something I rarely do, and after this past weekend I decided to give myself a good old breast exam. Time for you to do the same.
Let’s not forget how important all of this is for my male readers too. This is a good reminder for your girlfriends, wives, sisters, mothers and female friends.
Cancer prevention is no joke. Prevention and early detection are key. Trust your instincts and listen to what your body is telling you.
So go forth and feel yourself up! Make it a regular thing. (Check out B4BC’s app for monthly self exam reminders.) Such a great way to show yourself some REAL LOVE.
I leave you with some beautiful words from Megan Pischke, “Here is what I want all women to know about their breasts: That they are yours, and that they are important beyond how they look or feel to your lovers. That they belong, regardless of their size or shape. And underneath those breasts are our hearts. And the synergy of your breasts and your heart can be truly amazing and can make a difference. Get to know them!”
