Hello my fabulous friends!
How did you fare this Halloween? Did you stick to healthy treats or make out like a candy corn bandit?
If you filled your bag with mini peanut butter cups, Sweet Tarts and suckers, you’re probably feeling sluggish or bloated right now, huh? Is your face suddenly breaking out? Are you craving sugar like it’s going out of style?
Now, I love me some Halloween holiday action (check out my costume this year), but what I don’t love is a mean sugar hangover. And if you’re feeling any of the above, no surprise here, you’ve got one.
So let’s just get down and dirty for a minute—sugar makes you fat, tired, grumpy and ugly. I wish I was kidding about this, but as I’ve explained before, the effects are actually quite serious.
Eating fat doesn’t make you fat; sugar does.
Eating too much sugar and carbs are the reasons that most people are tired all the time as well. Not to mention sugar zaps the collagen in your skin and dulls your complexion.
Most Americans consume up to three pounds of sugar every week! And unfortunately, it’s not always easy to get away from sugar. It’s added to almost everything processed that we eat these days, not just the foods we consider typical sweets or desserts.
So if you’re suffering from a sugar hangover, here are my top five simple steps to help you detoxify your bod and snap out of that candy coma.
Daily Detox: Start your day with a large glass of warm water with the juice of ½ an organic lemon to gently detoxify your liver, rev up your digestion and curb those candy cravings. This will also boost your immune system, energy and mood. Plus, water first thing in the a.m. is a great skin rejuvenator. Don’t forget to drink lots of water throughout the day too to keep your system moving!
Be a Lean Green Machine: Eat meals heavy in greens and non-starchy vegetables (Psst! Here’s a list). Add in lots of healthy fats like nuts and seeds, avocados, olive oil, coconut oil and Omega-3’s from fish like salmon, which will help make you feel fuller longer. And make sure you’re eating lean protein with every meal! All of this will help get your blood sugar back in check. Jumpstart your day with organic eggs and a green smoothie!
Sweat it Out: Move your bod! A heart pumping workout like spinning, hot yoga or even an impromptu dance session will help your body detoxify and release those toxins. Just get your blood pumping, so your body can push those bad boys out! And don’t forget to hydrate afterwards.
Question Your Cravings: Before you start unwrapping those Hershey Kisses, ask yourself if that is what you are really hungry for? Are you mindlessly or emotionally eating? Is this choice pushing you closer to your goals or further away? And most importantly, how are you going to feel afterwards? Instead, drink a big ass glass of water or sip on some green or mint tea. Water, all by itself, will help curb those cravings real quick.
Candy Binge Bounce Back: So if all else fails and you do find yourself with a sugar hangover, do not fret. We are human, so please don’t let this trigger a self shame spiral that derails you. Just start fresh and jump back on the healthy horse!
A Friendly Reminder: The holidays are upon us, my friends, so now is the perfect time to start keeping a food journal and get a support system in place. So if you haven’t started using My Fab Food Journal, it’s time to bust it out! You will become accountable to yourself real quick, which is so empowering!
