Hello my jet-setting gems!

I’m getting ready to head out of town for the holidays, and I always love seeing how a different city turns on the holiday cheer! Traveling can be super exciting, but let’s face it, it can also be a total nightmare. Rushing to the airport, cramming into an uncomfortable seat, recycled air, 200 strangers and 3 crying babies can really put a damper on your holiday spirit. It can also wreak havoc on your skin and your immune system.

While I can’t do anything about the crying babies, I can help you plan ahead to create a small pocket of bliss right in your seat. It’s easier than you think; you just need to bring the essentials with you.

So here are my top five must-have travel items for a smooth and relaxed journey. Regardless of whether your trip is short, you’re crossing oceans, or you’re stuck in the damn airport for hours on end, you’ll be happy you have your little bag of bliss with you.

1) A Trusty Water Bottle.

Now I’m a big advocate for glass or metal water bottles, but for travel, The Vapur Shades Water Bottle is a must. It holds an entire liter of water, and when it’s empty, you can roll it up and put it away in your pocket. I like to add in some Superfoods packets for a nutritional boost like Amazing Grass Raw Reserve, Berry Flavor or try the Amazing Grass Green Superfoods Packets Variety Pack to have a few to choose from.

Planes have super low humidity, so travel is uber dehydrating for your skin and body. It might mean a few more trips to the bathroom, but the extra water will help you keep your glow and reduce jetlag and fatigue. Just remember to bring it through security empty, and then fill it up before you get on the plane!

2) Lots of Yummy Snacks!

It’s a well-known fact: airport and airplane food sucks. It’s usually nothing but greasy burgers, salty fries and sugary drinks inside airport food courts and generic snack packs of empty calories on the plane. But luckily, there is always the option to bring your own treats, and you should take full advantage of it.

Always pack a piece or two of fruit, some raw veggies and almonds or healthy trail mix for a quick snack. Consider bringing a homemade veggie & hummus wrap too. Mary’s Gone Crackers, Kale Chips, and Perfect Bars are also awesome options—organic, healthy and delish.

3) A Small Essentials Bag.

Nothing is worse than having to rummage through your suitcase in the overhead bin, trying to find a hair tie or lip balm. So, put some of those smaller essential toiletries into a bag you can tuck into the seat pocket or under the seat in front of you. That way, when you need something, it’s at the ready.

Include items like a little toothbrush, toothpaste, eye drops, mints, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, lip balm, eye cream, brush or comb, ear plugs, eye mask, prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines (valerian root or magnesium to help with sleep), face wash or face wipes, and deodorant. And just for the ladies—don’t forget things like hair bands, bobby pins, tampons, tinted moisturizer, concealer, and mascara—and yes, maybe even an extra pair of undies for those long ass flights. Let’s get real—you won’t be feeling so fresh after sitting cross legged for 5+ hours! Just saying.

(P.S. Here’s a security tip. If you have liquid toiletries that need to go through the security scan, keep them in a Ziploc bag together. Once you’re through security, you can easily transfer them into your small essentials bag for the flight with the rest of your non-liquid items.)

4) Wear Comfy Layers.

Planes are usually freezer boxes one minute and then a little too warm the next, so dress in layers that are easy to pull on and off. My favorites include socks (compression socks are the best!!), a soft sweater or sweatshirt, a large scarf or wrap (doubles as a blanket or a pillow!) and a cool hat to help with the bed head.

5) Pack Your Own In-Flight Entertainment.

Load up your laptop or iPad with a couple of feel-good movies and pack your phone with your favorite tunes. If you use a service like Spotify, download a couple of playlists to listen to offline. Bring a good book or magazine, and a notebook and pen/pencil in case you want to do any reflection on the flight. Don’t forget your chargers and headphones!

And voila! You’re taken care of for hours, even if you’re stuck in the airport.

I’d love to know your tips and tricks for triumphant travels. How do you keep yourself stress-free and healthy while traveling? Please let me know in the comments below!
