Hello, my gorgeous Plante Lifers!
Last week, we covered some super easy methods to help you achieve and maintain naturally clear skin. Now, I want to take a deep dive into the beauty products we’re adding on top of our skin – because what goes on top, sinks in!
I believe keeping away from harsh chemicals is your first line of defense for clear, radiant skin. Using products made from natural ingredients—from plants, flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and even sustainably produced animal derivatives—will not only feed your skin better nutrients, but help you avoid any sensitive, bad reactions too.
My clients are always asking me what products I use on my face and skin, so for this month’s Plante Life Food for Thought, I’m serving up my Top 5 Non-Toxic Beauty Brands.
So step away from those fancy schmancy bottles with hard-to-pronounce ingredients and get ready to discover your new best beauty buds.
Tarte Cosmetics
I love it that their founder Maureen Kelly set out to prove that glamour can be good for you by pioneering the use of what she calls “high-performance naturals”. Tarte is a leader in healthy, eco-chic beauty, offering cruelty-free cosmetics infused with ingredients like super fruit and plant extracts, vitamins, minerals, essential oils and other naturally-derived ingredients. Their products are long-lasting and formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, synthetic fragrances and gluten, just to name a few.

Josie Maran
Josie Maran makes cosmetics that are high-quality and healthy for people and the planet. The key ingredient in their cosmetics line is 100% Pure, 100% Organic Argan Oil. They work with suppliers to ensure ingredients and packaging that minimize their impact on the earth. Their glass, cardboard, and PET plastic containers are all recyclable and most of their cartons are made from post-consumer-waste paper and printed with soy-based ink. Yay! And whenever possible, they source materials in ways that support the people and the land that produces them. For example, their Argan Oil is sustainably harvested and pressed by women’s co-ops in Morocco. These co-ops offer economic and social empowerment to their members, who work to protect argan forests.

Evolue Beauty
In 2007, Jean Seo opened the first eco-chic beauty boutique and started the movement for high quality and effective beauty products—without the harmful chemicals. Most well known for their anti-aging products, they source the best ingredients around the world that replace the fatty acids, moisture, oils, collagen, and elastin that we lose with age. They go above and beyond to ensure that ALL ingredients, plant or animal based, in Evolue are cruelty free and sustainably sourced.
Though we live in a society which openly demonizes animal-based products, Evolue’s mission is to bring the world the best skincare possible—and at the end of the day, we humans have skin like animals. Most plant-based ‘Natural Moisturizing Factor’ alternatives simply cannot measure up to the efficacy of their animal-based counterparts. One of the greatest issues of our century is the environmental and economical damage from un-sustainable production of animal-based products. That being said, their solution is not to indiscriminately cut out the use of animal-based ingredients all together—rather, they pick and choose the businesses they support, based on their ability to produce a sustainable and generally superior product.
I love that Evolue refuses to shy away from the issue and pretend like it isn’t a problem, but rather, supporting small-scale businesses which operate sustainably—is part of the solution.

Ann Marie Gianni
Wildcrafted organic skin care. Pure and simple. Ann Marie along with her husband Kevin are behind this natural skin care line. These luscious products smell divine and really work! I absolutely love that they are made from precious ingredients and the fragrance of the essential oils is excellent. I’ve used some of the best products out there on my skin, so if you’re looking for a skin care line that is equally organic, nourishing and effective, this is it. The coconut oil gives your skin a beautiful luster, the aloe cleansing cream feels lovely and clean, and the lightweight eye cream is a success at easing the eyes back into youthfulness.

EO Organics
Started by Susan Griffin and Brad Black in 1995, they decided to name their company EO for the essential oils that were both their first products and the heart and soul of everything they would create. To capture the purpose of their vision, they chose the motto: Love Life, Live Clean. EO is a certified organic manufacturer by the Coalition of Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and in 2011 became the first personal care company to be certified non-GMO by the Non-GMO Verified Project. Since there are still no regulations on cosmetics or personal care items when it comes to certification of ingredients, they sought and obtained the certification used for food. You go, Susan and Brad!
They are dedicated to making personal care products that nurture the people who use them, respect the people who make them, and honor the planet we all share. They believe that what we put on our bodies is as important as what we put in our bodies, so they research, develop, manufacture, and ship their own lotions, soaps, and shampoos. Pretty awesome, huh?
