The audition process can put you through quite the mental wringer: the call from your agent, memorizing last-minute sides, those first audition jitters, multiple callbacks, little to no feedback and then, the agonizing wait. And all before you even step foot on a set. That is why it’s so important to have a clear, strong mindset in order to manifest your dream acting career.
You’ve probably heard of the Law of Attraction, the New Thought philosophy, or The Secret, the best-selling book based on the same concept, but do you know how to manifest? Perhaps you’ve read the teachings of Marianne Williamson or Gabrielle Bernstein or listened to the concepts put forth by Jerry and Esther Hicks and The Vortex.
At one point or another, they have all touched on the concept of manifestation—that your positive or negative thoughts draw similar experiences into your life.
Like attracts like. Birds of a feather flock together. Like two peas in a pod. Kindred spirits. We go together like PB & J. Regardless of the saying, there is something true behind all these expressions that directly relates to how you can manifest auditions, roles and relationships to nurture your career.
And while manifesting is not necessarily magic, we’re going to utilize the most magical tool any of us possess—our minds!
What Is Manifesting?
Manifesting is basically the belief that every thought we have collectively dictates the energy flow within us and around our physical body. So in that way, we are always manifesting.
If all you think about every day is, “I suck,” well, then your energy is going to suck too. The opposite is also true. When you project, “I am a badass,” your confident energy is going to be more attractive to like-minded people and experiences.
There is a quote from Esther Hicks’s book, The Vortex: Where the Law of Attraction Assembles All Cooperative Relationships, that says, “A belief is only a thought that I keep thinking,” so why not think more productive thoughts until you believe them?
It’s common sense: how much better are you going to feel if the majority of your thoughts about your acting abilities are positive and loving? So choose to experience thoughts of care and confidence instead of fear and negativity. Instantly, your life as a whole will be better.
That sounds pretty damn good to me, but if you’re worried this is a little too good to be true, or too woo-woo New Age, I get it. In all honesty, manifesting in and of itself isn’t going to change you. The introspection and growth you go through in order to manifest is what is truly going to help you in the long run, especially if you want to have a long, thriving career in this business.
Our intentions and thoughts create our reality. If you pay attention to how you think and feel at, let’s say, an important audition, and choose to think better, more productive thoughts, you will draw in people and opportunities that are in alignment with those positive ideas. So the factor that ultimately changes your life is improving your internal experience and thought patterns.
So whether you’re all in or just curious to see how your mindset shifts, here are 5 steps to manifest the career and life of your dreams.
1) Make Space For Positive Thoughts
The first step in how to manifest is to make some mental room for those good things to settle in. This basically involves asking for guidance (from whatever higher power you believe in) to help clear all the things that are blocking you from believing in your own greatness.
You are deserving of good things, period. But sometimes it’s hard to remember this when you’re feeling stuck or disappointed or envious of what other people have that you feel you don’t (yet!) possess.
So it is essential to clear the mental cobwebs of doubt and fear to make way for shiny, new energy and priorities. Think of it as the ultimate spring cleaning!
This step is also often where challenges come into your life because you may need to learn and grow before you can release those thought patterns and deep seated beliefs that are no longer serving you. I prefer to call these challenges assignments because that word doesn’t denote it’s something actively working against you.
In fact, these assignments might at first appear negative, like a co-star who presses all your buttons or the end of a professional relationship, but they can expose places in your life you’re meant to heal. Your experience with the irritating co-star may force you to deal with a fear of conflict or assertiveness. The loss of a relationship can teach you to build your self-reliance.
Reframing bad experiences as opportunities can help you make room in your life to call in what you truly desire.
2) Get Super Specific About Your Goals
Now let’s talk about specificity and clarity. You have to be clear about your intentions for what you want to manifest into your acting or creative career—and really for anything in your life. For me, I find it most useful to make a list specifically focused on my desired outcome and everything about it that goes along with it.
So, you want to know how to manifest a new agent? Get specific. How does that person treat you? How do you feel in this relationship? What is communication like? How does that person handle conflict or emotional issues? Get into the nitty-gritty details, and above all, be unapologetic! Ask for what you truly want. This is your vision.
The list will help you be super clear about your intentions and help you get a wonderful mental picture about what it is that you really want to call in.
And don’t forget to envision how you want to feel when you have it, because ideally you can access that feeling immediately any and every time you reread your list. When you do that, the vibration of already having what you want is what initiates the manifestation coming into form.
3) Check In With Yourself Consistently
Spend time with your desire every day. Sink into the feeling of what it’s like to have the acting career of your dreams. Meditate, do some visioning exercises, create a vision board, take the feeling out into nature. Maybe even incorporate it into your morning ritual; just a thought. 😉
Anything that helps you feel grounded and in sync will help deepen your connection to that desire. And the more you connect with that desire, the more confident you’ll feel that it is on its way to you.
And by all means, think outside the box! If you want a lead role in a Blockbuster film, why not learn a monologue from your favorite and act it out, even if it’s just for you? If you want an Oscar, why not find your gorgeous gown and try it on? There are no limits to how much fun you can have with the process.
4) Chill The F#$@ Out
This is how to manifest 101. It’s one of the most important steps. Ultimately, we have no control over when our desire arrives or what form it’s going to take. Regardless of how specific and clear you are, you’re going to have to channel Elsa and let it go.
Those who are certain of the outcome can afford to wait and wait without anxiety.
– A Course in Miracles
Don’t stay so focused on the minute details of your desire that you miss the better gift from the Universe. For example, you don’t want to be so set on that part in a Blockbuster that you miss it when the Universe wants to give you a great role in an indie film. I guarantee that The Powers That Be have a way better plan than you do. So, do the work. Make it a fun experience for yourself, and then relax.
5) Trust The Universe Has Your Back
Trust that you will always be taken care of. When you stand in that knowledge, you’re deliberate about what you want. It informs your decisions. You no longer vibrate energy of fear or disbelief, and the more that disbelief washes away, wanting and desiring is replaced by the calm sensation of knowing.
Knowing it will all work out.
Knowing your desires are on their way to you.
It’s a natural, fluid process.
And this can be the most difficult step to remember. I totally get it. I have times when I really have to remind myself to walk my walk too. Don’t get discouraged. Embrace that you’re already living in one of your desired manifestations and that your other manifestations will catch up with you in good time. You are co-creating with the Universe, and it won’t let you down.
This is a practice, and practice makes perfect. So roll up your sleeves and give these how to manifest steps a try. Open yourself up to a positive mental shift and the powerful expansion into the acting career (and life) you truly desire.
